MIAMI - The FC Miami City Champions are very pleased to welcome Sidney Govou to our team for the remainder of the PDL season. The man who played the majority of his career at Olympique Lyonnais and won seven league championships with the club has decided to join our club for the 2015 PDL season.
Govou’s goal this year is to help us progress as a club. His participation in our team is really beneficial for our young players. It will help them develop their skills and involvement in the game, thanks to his experience.
Govou is a natural winger but occasionally plays as a striker.
Govou's Professional career
Sidney Govou played for Lyon for more than 10 years, playing a part in their seven consecutive league title wins in the 2000s. He played in more than 300 games for Lyon in all competitions. His versatility certainly helped the team progress. Govou even had the opportunity to captain the side on many occasions, replacing the departing club-legend Juninho with the armband. During the time he spent in the club, he won all seven of their league titles and aided in some victories in domestic cup competition.
Govou had the opportunity to play with Sony Anderson and Juninho with Lyon, and Djibril Cissé at Panathinaikos.
Govou’s International career
At the International level, Govou has been highly successful for France, with which he finished as the runner-up to Italy during the 2006 World Cup. He played for his country at the 2004 and 2008 European Championships, and the 2006 and 2010 World Cups with players such as Zinedine Zidane, Claude Makélélé, Thierry Henry, Karim Benzema, Eric Abidal, Florent Malouda, and Jeremy Toulalan.
Govou will help FC Miami City progress in the upcoming PDL season as the club seeks a place in the PDL Playoffs in its inaugural season. The club is also thrilled to welcome this former world-class international French player in our Patrons pool. Our fans and all the soccer enthusiasts will benefit from his experience. His expertise will be a tremendous asset to the players in the league.
Govou will also come to the field during our summer camp to help train our kids from the Academy.
