Carolina Dynamo alum one of Toronto’s strongest players this MLS season

Former Carolina Dynamo goalkeeper Clint Irwin changed MLS clubs during the offseason when he was traded from the Colorado Rapids to Toronto FC.

TFC has depended quite heavily on the 27-year-old’s presence.

While Irwin’s 1-2-2 record isn't eye popping, his effort has been one of the league’s best. Irwin is tied for fourth in MLS with 21 saves, and Toronto’s five goals conceded in five matches tie for the best rate in the Eastern Conference.

“He’s not the guy in the offseason who got the headlines when we picked him up,” Toronto FC Head Coach Greg Vanney said following Saturday’s 1-1 draw against the New England Revolution. “For us, though, it was one of the most important pickups.”

The Toronto Sun featured the goalkeeper, saying that “after Sebastian Giovinco, he has been Toronto’s best player through the first five weekends.”

“He’s a very stable figure back there,” Vanney said. “His distribution has been solid. He has been great in every way. He never gets over emotional in either direction and it’s really stabilizing for our back line to know he’s back there.”

Irwin, matter-of-factly, says that lack of emotion and due diligence comes with the territory.

“It’s important to do your job out there and contribute in any way possible,” Irwin said. “I don’t think my confidence is any higher or lower than it normally is. Any way I can contribute as a goalkeeper, that’s all I’m looking to do.”

For center back Drew Moor, a PDL alum with Chicago Fire U-23 who also played in front of Irwin at the Rapids, Irwin has been a rock for the defense.

“It’s a big confidence boost,” Moor said. “I’ve played with him for four seasons. Having him back there is a sigh of relief for so many guys who are playing in front of him.”

“We have a lot of faith in him and he’s answered the bell,” Vanney said. “We’re pleased to have him.”
