San Diego Surf Soccer Club and the North County Battalion joined forces to create a PDL franchise in November, and on Tuesday, the expansion club revealed its team name, logo and more.
The two clubs have combined to create the SoCal Surf, who will play their home matches at the Army and Navy Academy's Maffucci Field in downtown Carlsbad, California.
"Delivering soccer excellence has always been our top priority and our unwavering promise to our supporters, our players, and our community," said Jason Barbato, club founder and CEO. "By rebranding as SoCal Surf, joining the PDL and relocating our home matches to beautiful downtown Carlsbad, we are further fulfilling this promise and ensuring that we provide the entire San Diego community with the soccer club they deserve, a soccer club with deep roots, proud tradition, and a bright future."
“Due to San Diego’s geographical landscape, being one of the largest cities in the United States, it lends itself to have two high-performing PDL teams competing in the same market and we are thrilled to have SoCal Surf as part of our growing league,” PDL Director Todd Eason said. “We see a rivalry to be created between SoCal Surf and San Diego Zest FC, similar to San Francisco City FC and Burlingame Dragons FC, who have been able to establish a spirited rivalry based on their proximity to one another that has excited an entire community.”
