UNC Charlotte's Luke Waechter
Waechter, who played collegiately for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, joins the Charlotte Independence after scoring one goal in six games for the Carolina Dynamo last season.
"We knew a little bit about the quality of Luke's play at UNCC before having him in [for preseason]," Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries said in a release. "For a guy just starting his professional career, he has a very professional mentality in terms of how he approaches each day. Once again, it's nice for us to be able to bring in a strong, local player."
In 2015, Morton played 11 games during the PDL regular season, recording five shutouts, a 0.82 goals-against average and 50 saves. He joined the Energy U23 in 2016, helping them earn the Mid South Division title by recording five saves in two regular season games. He also played in both 2016 PDL Playoffs matches, making three stops over the course of 210 minutes. He joins the Rochester Rhinos ahead of the 2017 USL regular season.
"Kyle has really good upside, good size, and good athleticism," Rhinos Head Coach Bob Lilley said in a release. "We like his feet, his distribution and he's a pretty good shot stopper."
The Rhinos also revealed the signing of 2017 Major League Soccer SuperDraft selection Jalen Brown on Tuesday*. Brown, who played collegiately for the University of Xavier, appeared for the Des Moines Menace during the 2016 PDL regular season.
