SUMNER, Wash. - The Sounders FC U-23 (2-0-1, 7pts) notched five first-half goals on their way to a 5-0 victory against Puget Sound Gunners FC (0-3-2, 2pts) on Friday night at Sunset Stadium. The Sounders’ forward tandem of Brandt Bronico and Guillermo Delgado accounted for four goals and two assists.

After a bit of a scramble just outside the top of the Gunners' penalty area, the ball squirted through the defense and into the box. The opportunistic Delgado already had his defender perfectly shielded, and then with the outside of his right foot, he buried his shot into the left corner. In only the fourth minute, the Sounders U-23 were up 1-0.

Then in the 16th minute, the Sounders U-23 doubled their lead. Sounders U-23 defender Alex Decarolis sent a long throw-in into the Gunners' penalty area. The ball sailed all the way to the back post where midfielder Florian Valot was waiting. With a well-timed leap, Valot won the header and sent it into the low corner, beating the keeper for a 2-0 score.

The Sounders U-23 extended the lead in the 25th minute. They found themselves with numbers moving toward the Gunners goal as Delgado took the ball just outside the box up the right side. He slid a square pass to fellow forward, Bronico, who knew just what to do. With his first touch Bronico had beaten his marker, and then with his right foot he sent a low shot into the back of the net for a 3-0 lead.

The Sounders U-23 put a fourth goal on the board in the 34th minute. With a defender on each hip, Delgado raced for the ball as it bounced into the box toward the Gunners goalkeeper.  At the last moment he reached out with his right boot and poked the ball into the oncoming keeper. The ball deflected high into the air as Delgado raced on. He beat two Gunners' defenders to the ball and then headed it into the empty net to make the score 4-0.

In the 43rd minute the Sounders U-23 capped off a five-goal first half. The two Sounders forwards connected again as Delgado sent a driving ball across the face of the goal from the right side. The Gunners goalkeeper got two hands to the ball but could only deflect it back out into danger. Bronico was in prime position and sent the ball into the net with his first touch increasing the gap to 5-0.

In the second half the Sounders U-23 simply tried to keep possession of the ball as they cruised on to the victory securing another three points. The win sets up a showdown on June 12th, as the Sounders U-23 return to Sunset Stadium to host the first place Kitsap Pumas at 7 p.m. PT. The Pumas are at the top of the league thanks to a 4-0-0 start earning 12 points. For more information including how to purchase tickets, visit
