CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte Eagles goalkeeper James Pyle secured his third shutout in four games as the Charlotte Eagles took a 2-0 victory against the Carolina Dynamo at the Queens Sports Complex. The victory allowed the Eagles (4-0-0, 12pts) to remain perfect in the PDL's South Atlantic Division to start the season.
The Eagles and Dynamo (0-3-1, 1 pt) traded possession early to start the game. Dynamo forward Avery Ryan had an early opportunity in the second minute cut short by defender Lalas Abubakar. The Eagles quickly retaliated in the fourth minute with a strong scoring chance by forward Daniel ten Bosch, but it was cut short by goalkeeper Austin Pack outside the penalty area. Four minutes later, an Eagles corner kick found defender Scout Monteith's head, but Pack was able to contain the effort.
In the 10th minute, Carolina was awarded a free kick at midfield off an Eagles foul, but Abubakar was able to corral the strong offensive threat to maintain the scoreless match. Six minutes later, the Eagles had an opportunity of their own by virtue of a strong outlet pass by defender Mason McCarter to forward Danny Jensen, but it was halted by Dynamo defender Erien Campbell's slide tackle.
Carolina continued on the offensive in the 19th minute, with the initial attack deflected over the Charlotte goal line by the defense, earning the Dynamo a corner kick that would be cleared to midfield. The Dynamo returned the ball into the Eagles penalty area, only to see Abubakar block a shot over the end line again for another Carolina corner. The Eagles' defense stood strong once again, repelling the Dynamo's chance.
The Eagles' offense finally broke through in the 24th minute. Eagles Player of the Game, forward Zhuvonte Wilson, received a leading pass up the left sideline. Following a spectacular series of one-on-one moves, he was able to send a pass into the Dynamo six-yard area that found ten Bosch, who redirected it past Pack into the bottom-right corner of the net.
"The ball was on my left foot," said Wilson, "so I had to get enough power to get the ball there. It was definitely not a shot, so I'm glad that ten Bosch was there to finish it."
The final score of the game came only fourteen minutes later, and Wilson was once again involved. Wilson stole the goalkeeper's pass to a defender and wove through a couple of defenders. He was able to pass to midfielder Josue Chavez, who controlled the pass and sent it to the far corner of the net for the Eagles' insurance goal.
"It was all Danny Jensen," said Wilson. "He pressured the center back, and I was there to pick up the play. I picked up the ball and ran up the defender. Josue was wide open, so I played him. It was kind of a bad pass, but he finished it off, he made me look good."
Following the half, both teams exchanged scoring chances as they did in the beginning of the first half, but Pyle was able to deflect all the shots he faced to maintain a shutout and see out the match.
