Eagles take top spot; Nashville SC U23, Tobacco Road enter top five

The Eastern Conference Power Rankings experienced major shakeups, including a new No. 1, following Week 2 action in the Premier Development League.

Led by Head Coach Dave Dixon, the Charlotte Eagles caught the attention of many by handily defeating a talented Wilmington Hammerheads FC team at home. The performance helped them climb to the top spot in this week's rankings, while two new teams in the Nashville SC U23 and Tobacco Road FC jump into the top five.

Eastern Conference Top 5:

1. Charlotte Eagles

Overview: Following an impressive win in the First Round of the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the Charlotte Eagles cruised to an impressive 6-2 victory against in-state rival Wilmington Hammerheads FC, which was ranked No. 2 in the preseason edition of the Eastern Conference Power Rankings. While Joao Costa and Kelvin Omondi scored five of the team's six goals, Lindsey Wilson College talent Mutaya Mwape bossed the midfield, demonstrating his quality with the ball on multiple occasions.

2. Reading United AC

Week 2 Results: W 3-1 vs. Lehigh Valley United

Next Game: at New York Red Bulls U23 (7 p.m. ET, May 20)
Overview: Despite falling a spot in this edition of the Eastern Conference Power Rankings, Reading United AC has demonstrated its strength over the course of two games. After winning in the U.S. Open Cup, the 2016 Mid Atlantic Division winner secured a 3-1 win against Lehigh Valley United at home. University of Syracuse talent Hugo Delhommelle showed off his abilities in the result, providing two assists, and Reading United will look for him to continue his form as the club defends its title.

3. Ocean City Nor'easters

Next Game: vs. Evergreen FC (7 p.m. ET, May 19)
Overview: The Ocean City Nor'easters, winners of the 2016 Eastern Conference Championship, kick off their PDL campaign in Week 3, but fans and followers got a sneak peek of how the team will fare in the U.S. Open Cup last week. Fredlin Mompremier, Tyler Collishaw, and Akiel Barrett each tallied a goal, as the Nor'easters cruised to the Second Round of the tournament. Led by Head Coach John Thompson, the Mid Atlantic Division side looks poised for another strong year.

4. Nashville SC U23

Week 2 Results: W 6-1 vs. Peachtree City MOBA
2017 PDL Record: 1-0-0
Next Game: vs. South Georgia Tormenta FC (7 p.m. CT, May 20)
Overview: Ahead of the season, the Nashville SC U23 looked strong on paper, which landed them a spot among the Honorable Mentions in the preseason edition of the Eastern Conference Power Rankings. On Saturday, the club proved to be as good as expected, earning a convincing 6-1 win against Peachtree City MOBA at home. Martim Galvao, who finished the 2016 PDL season ranked No. 24 on the Top Prospects list, led the team with two goals scored. Blake Wilson also impressed, scoring once and assisting once in 62 minutes of action.

5. Tobacco Road FC

Next Game: vs. Myrtle Beach Mutiny (7 p.m. ET, May 19)
Overview: It may be Tobacco Road FC's first PDL season, but the Durham-based club is making a name for itself among the many talented Carolina-based teams. Tobacco Road kicked off its season on the road against the North Carolina FC U23 on Wednesday, and it came away with a point after Jonathan Ray scored an equalizer in the 89th minute. On Saturday, the club had its way with the Carolina Dynamo, as Ray once again scored a goal in the 4-0 result.
