PDL Players to Watch in action this past week found plenty of goals and their teams found victories as a result.
Leading the way this week was Carolina Dynamo forward Jon Bakero, who carried Wake Forest to a pair of wins with four goals and an assist in the team’s matches against Longwood and Virginia Tech, the latter a key ACC win for the Demon Deacons.
Joining Bakero as top performers this week are SIMA Aguilas forward Diego Campos, South Georgia Tormenta FC midfielder Charlie Dennis, Tampa Bay Rowdies U23 forward Ricky Lopez-Espin, and FA Euro forward Charlie Ledula.
Wake Forest outscored their two opponents, Longwood and Virginia Tech, by a combined 11-0 score-line over the past week. A huge chunk of that production came from Carolina Dynamo forward Jon Bakero, who combined for four goals and one assist over those two matches. Bakero first slotted home two and assisted one in the team’s 8-0 win over Longwood, before adding an additional two in a key conference win, 3-0, against Virginia Tech.
Clemson came out of the week with two victories, the first over Gardner-Webb and the second a huge ACC win over Duke. SIMA Aguilas forward Diego Campos had a helpful match on Tuesday, as he picked up two assists in the team’s 5-0 win over Gardner-Webb. He impressed again against Duke on Friday, powering a hat-trick past the Blue Devil defense to pull Clemson to a 4-1 win.
The Creighton Bluejays found themselves on the right side of a pair of lopsided results, winning twice over the past week. The team first took down Drake, 6-1, helped on by a game-winning goal from Tampa Bay Rowdies U23 forward Ricky Lopez-Espin. He’d come up big again on Saturday, as he scored two to lead Creighton over Xavier by a 4-1 final score.
LIU Post continued their unbeaten season this week, earning another two wins against tough opponents in Philadelphia and the University of D.C. The Pioneers 3-1 win against the former of the two came entirely at the feet of FA Euro forward Charlie Ledula, who knocked in a hat-trick to lead the team to victory. Ledula would seize a fourth goal on the week in the team’s 4-3 win over UDC.
South Georgia Tormenta FC midfielder Charlie Dennis had a highly-productive week in attack for Palm Beach Atlantic in a pair of shut-out wins for the Sailfish. First, Dennis recorded a brace in the team’s 4-0 win over Nova Southeastern on Wednesday, his second and third goals this year. He’d get his fourth and fifth next time out as he recorded another brace in the team’s 3-0 win over Eckerd College.
The Mercer Bears had just one win in two matches last week, but it was a good one as the team secured a comprehensive victory over Wofford on Saturday following a scoreless draw with East Tennessee State. Leading the way in the win was Sounders FC U23 forward William Bagrou, who picked up two goals and an assist in a nine-minute span.
In a pair of Florida International wins, Reading United AC defender Paul Marie came up huge on the offensive end for the Panthers. Marie scored the opening goal in what ended up as a 4-3 goal-fest win over Florida Gulf Coast. In the team’s subsequent win over South Carolina, Marie powered another two into the net, including the team’s game-winner in the 4-3 victory.
